Off with her Head, Portrait of a Moroccan Blues Singer.
2018 - 10m52s - Short Portrait - Czech Republic / Morocco
«I only improvise - it’s a feeling - a delusion - a trance - where my whole body starts shaking - It’s healing.» Hafsa
In the heart of Prague, Hafsa, a bisexual blues singer with a mysterious past, reflects on her roots in Morocco, a place she left behind, cloaked in secrecy. She dismisses discussions about her departure as she immerses herself in the realm of improvisation. For Hafsa, improvisation is not just a musical technique; it's a visceral experience—a delusion, a trance that courses through her entire being, a form of healing. Within the confines of her enigmatic world, Hafsa's home may be an illusion, but her journey unfolds as a captivating portrait of resilience and musical passion.
This short film is an exploration of Hafsa’s own experience of having to leave her country and the concept/feeling of “home." How does this singular and universal experience reach her? Only living at night, she drowns herself until being able to walk on stage. She sings and leaves. When she is isolated on the stage under the lights, it becomes a non-place, an "anywhere" where only her performance gives a landmark. She is able to convey those mixed feelings and reach a trance that makes her be in Morocco no matter where she is in the world.
